Why Are There No Condos on The Danforth?

The Danforth represents a lot of things to a lot of people. It is the centre of the city’s Greek community and home to one of the city’s largest festivals, it’s a major transit route for moving people in and out of downtown, and it is generally regarded as one of the city’s most desirable neighbourhoods to live in. However, one thing it definitely is NOT, is a hot spot for high-rise condo development. But why not?

For a long time my understanding is the east side of the city is in the direct line of the migration route of hundreds of species of migratory birds. Tall buildings, especially when lit at night – puts species at increased risk: “In the dark, and especially in foggy or rainy weather, the combination of glass and light becomes deadly. Confused by artificial lights, blinded by weather, and unable to see glass, birds by the hundreds and even thousands can be injured or killed in one night at one building. Over 140 different species of birds have collided with buildings in Toronto alone.”

WHERE IS THE INFORMATION to assure those of use who enjoy watching the different bird species, that developers aren’t putting our native migratory birds at risk? Will condo owners have stickers of birds of prey on their windows to deter the birds from colliding into the windows and falling to the ground injured? … Or will they just stand on their balconies, clueless (or worse … care-less), as to why injured and dead birds are on their balconies or lying around the condo’s grounds? If you don’t know about it, then please visit flap.org. … And start questioning these “urban planners” … instead of relying on blind assumption that they’ve addressed it. No matter how they paint it, if species are dying from ignorance, it’s still NOT “green”. If the developer can assure us their condos aren’t causing havoc in the night skies, then great, we’re happy to see the building in the skyline. But please have the decency to assure the public, before you build.
